If you're a nail tech in New Zealand looking to level up your extension game, builder gel needs to be in your kit. But what exactly is it, and how does it differ from other gel products? Let's break it all down.
WHAT IS BUILDER GEL?
Builder gel is a thick, self-levelling gel product designed to add strength, structure and length to the natural nail. Unlike gel polish which is purely cosmetic, builder gel is a structural product — it builds the nail up, creating a strong, durable foundation that can be shaped and filed.
It's perfect for clients who want longer, stronger nails without the rigidity of acrylic.
WHY NZ NAIL TECHS LOVE BUILDER GEL
1. STRENGTH AND STRUCTURE
Builder gel adds serious strength to the natural nail. Perfect for clients with weak, bendy or damaged nails who want length without breakage.
2. SELF-LEVELLING FORMULA
Builder gel naturally finds its own level, making it easier to create smooth, even enhancements without air bubbles or lumps.
3. FLEXIBLE YET STRONG
Unlike acrylic, builder gel has a natural flexibility that makes it more comfortable to wear and less likely to snap under pressure.
4. WORKS AS AN OVERLAY OR EXTENSION
Use builder gel as a natural nail overlay for added strength, or with nail forms and tips for full extensions. Versatile for every client need.
5. BEAUTIFUL NATURAL FINISH
Builder gel cures to a glossy, natural-looking finish that your clients will love. Apply gel polish over the top for endless colour options.
HOW TO USE BUILDER GEL
Step 1 — Prep the nail. Push back cuticles, lightly buff the nail plate and remove all dust.
Step 2 — Apply Non-Acid Primer and allow to air dry.
Step 3 — Apply a thin layer of rubber base gel and cure for 60 seconds.
Step 4 — Apply your builder gel in a thin first layer. Cap the free edge and cure for 60 seconds.
Step 5 — Apply a second, thicker layer and shape/pinch as needed. Cure for 60 seconds.
Step 6 — File and shape to your desired nail shape.
Step 7 — Apply gel polish and top coat as normal.
BUILDER GEL VS RUBBER BASE — WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
This is one of the most common questions we get at Nails Factor Supplies!
Rubber base gel is a flexible base coat that bonds to the natural nail, providing structure and coverage. It's perfect for natural nail overlays and strengthening weak nails.
Builder gel is thicker and more structural — it's designed to build length and serious strength. Think of rubber base as your foundation and builder gel as your walls.
Many nail techs use both together for the ultimate nail enhancement — rubber base first, then builder gel on top for extra structure.
